of the Year, 2020

Information

We all start somewhere right?

Once, I was walking backwards down the aisle photographing this sparkling new marriage that had just exchanged rings, when I went & fell over the Flower Girl. Yes, in the middle-of the aisle… the Flower Girl. She HOWLED. It was the first wedding I ever shot.

Despite wanting the ground to open & swallow me whole in that moment, I stuck with it & learnt one or two things here & there over the last 15Yrs. Then, in 2017 I grabbed the Australian Wedding Photographer of the Year, & in 2020 the International Wedding Photographer of the Year.

I still walk backwards down the aisle though.

I became a photographer so I could create a life out of doing what I’m passionate about. I’m an advocate of the ‘good-times’ & want clients finishing a shoot with that feeling. I get excited like a 5Yr old on red cordial when faced with natural expressions & interactions, though I’m chill almost 100% of the time.

I dig the adventure-had, engagement-with & connections-made when telling peoples stories. I’m attracted to lighting that creates dimension and enhances the power of a story, whether it’s to flatter people, the fashion or to create artistic scenes, it’s a language that I speak and understand its best use. I’m allergic to photographing forced smiles and prefer the savoir faire of honouring fleeting moments. I seek to ‘Break The Rules’ – of photographing that is… I’m no criminal, maybe when it comes to grammar.

I know it’s a big ask, asking people to relax & be themselves in front of a camera. So, this is a little something about me. When I watch a movie on a flight, there’s tears, 100% of the time. I have no idea what the root cause of this is (altitude?), but when I’m travelling alone, it can get awkward af.

“I love making people feel great and helping them throughout their day but don’t just take it from me.”

Nathan and Rachel

“It’s like you transcend the day- so it’s not really about the day. You capture the reasons for having a wedding in the first place.

Anyone can photograph stuff or copy a trend.  Details, things, the trappings and traps of what a wedding “should look like”- the surface stuff.

But you capture the things that lie beneath the surface. You capture love, joy, connection, the heart of the story, and all the very human parts. Tears, laughter, hugs, drunken dancing, celebration, irreplaceable moments between loved ones. I’d never felt so beautiful in my whole life on my wedding day, and your photos reflect that feeling. I actually saw it too. Those photos of me, healed parts of myself that felt ugly and rejected. Being photographed by you felt so empowering.

The incredible thing though about you James, is that you not only capture these things, but the way you capture them, honours them into the highest realms. You make moments, into art, you make the fleeting and potentially forgotten pieces, immortal, and utterly breathtakingly beautiful.

And you do it, with elegance, energy and respect. You were one of the best parts of our day, and you enriched our souls too.

We love you so much x  Rach and Nath”
